Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa, located in downtown Rio de Janeiro, is uniquely located on top of a mountain with a privileged view of the center and the south side of Rio.

The history of neighborhood

The neighborhood was developed in the 18th century and was named after a convent with the same name. It was later inhabited by the wealthier classes with large homes and mansions which were inspired by French architecture. Over the years, Santa Teresa has become a neighborhood of great cultural and touristic interest.

Today intellectuals, academics and artists live there and are attracted by the quality of life that this area has to offer. This neighborhood is also a center of gastronomic importance, as can be seen by the boutique hotel “Santa Teresa”.  The hotel has hosted and catered to international artists, including the singer Amy Winehouse.
